Every career that you pursue always has its code of ethics to be followed. In particular the code of ethics for nurses [Registered Nurse (RN), Nurse Practitioners, Head Nurse, License Practical Nurse, Home Nurses, Nursing Aide, and Newborn Nurse] is composed of a set of ethical behavior that these nurses are expected to perform. For them this code of ethics serves as their main guide in performing their duty and obligation and also their light in their decision making especially if the situation calls for ethical matters.
It also helps each nurse to internalize their work through self evaluation and self reflection regarding ethical nursing practice and a good means to provide peer review and feedback.
Another purpose of the code of ethics for nurses is to provide a basis for their ethical standard, where in they can give quality services and practice within the environment they work with.
Therefore upon earning the nursing degree it is a must that you as a nursing student are already aware and knowledgeable enough with this code of ethics. Even the smallest details of this, you should be familiar so that upon employment you already have an idea of what you are going to do and ready to face the challenges that awaits you.
It also serves as a general rule that will ensure effective and ethically good practice for nurses. In order to help develop their professional practice and growth, sensitivity to every ethical question should also be a part of nurses’ basic education. This will serve as mirror to each and every one of them especially if they are in a situation where proper actions, decisions, and ethics are involved.
Always remember that as a nurse in your daily life you are dealing with individual person, community, agency and society so attention to ethics at various levels should be the nurse priority.
